I LOVE the Pittsburgh Pirates. Always have, always will. I can remember watching the games at my grandparents’ house, my “Pa” in his favorite lazy boy chair, kicked back, rooting on our Buccos. I’m a little bit of a PGH sports nut. I come by it honestly.
Everyone knows that the Pirates haven’t had a winning season since 1992. So the Pirates, (as of this writing) are in first place and 22 games over .500, having the best record in MLB, and the town is in kind of a Bucco frenzy. I can’t believe I just wrote that…better read it again to make sure I’m not dreaming! My Pa would be so happy!
On Aug. 1, 2013, the Pirates hosted their first ever FAITH NIGHT at PNC Park. When Simon found out about it and heard from a co-worker that there was a chance for one of our boys to ask Andrew McCutchen a question, I was ALL OVER IT! (Anyone who knows me well kinda knows that’s my M.O. 15 minutes of fame chaser. Yes, I freely admit it!) Long story short, Joshua was chosen, along with another boy from church named Dylan. We were so excited to join in the Pirate fever!
So we go to the game, seeing many fans with brooms in hand, ready to cheer on the Buccos to a FIVE GAME SWEEP! The air was electric! The fans were ready! Unfortunately, the Pirate players were not….it was a pounding 13-0 loss. To say I was depressed was an understatement. But of course there’s a bright side, and the Pirates are still on top!
After the game, Joshua was escorted onto the field where Andrew McCuthechen, Neil Walker, Pedro Alvarez, Alex Presley, Jordy Mercer, Mark Melancon, Josh Harrison, Charlie Morton and Clint Hurdle were seated for the Faith Night part of the evening. It was amazing! There were several thousand fans that stuck around in the stands to hear the speakers. Joshua and Dylan did an amazing job asking McCutchen their questions. Clint Hurdle, Jay Bell, and Mark Melancon shared great testimonies. It was a wonderful end to a let-down of a game. Jesus Christ’s name was lifted high and people heard the Gospel and about the FREE GIFT of salvation that God offers through belief in his Son. It was a night we will never forget! here are some of my favorite images that captured the evening.
My boys made the Jumbotron scoreboard!
The clouds and sunset were A-MAZ-ING!
Some sweet faces I captured in the stands.
Recognizing the players.
Andrew McCutchen answered several questions and then introduced his mother and father. His mom is below in the green blouse.
Joshua’s turn! His question was, “Can you talk about a difficult time in your life when God helped you?”
Joshua was all smiles when he was done!
Clint Hurdle was so good! He is the REAL DEAL!
